Cannabinoid Potency

There are more than 100 cannabinoids that can be found in cannabis plants and extracts. Accurate quantification is important information for the customer and producer alike. Sriven Labs utilizes a rigorous high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) method to quantify 11 cannabinoids including: CBDV, CBDA, CBGA, CBG, CBD, THCV, CBN, Δ9-THC, Δ8-THC, CBC, and THCA.

Terpene Profiling

Terpenes are the naturally occurring aromatic compounds in cannabis that contribute to its unique smell and flavor. They have many additional functions in the plant and can produce a range of therapeutic and mood-altering effects in consumers. Sriven Labs utilizes gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) to detect and quantify 37 different terpenes found within cannabis which include: α-pinene, camphene, sabinene, β-myrcene, β-pinene, α-phellandrene, 3-carene, α-terpinene, β-ocimene, D-limonene, eucalyptol, γ-terpinene, γ-terpinolene, sabinene hydrate, linalool, fenchone, fenchol, isopulegol, camphor, isoborneol, menthol, borneol, terpineol, nerol, geraniol, pulegone, geranyl acetate, α-cedrene, caryophyllene, humulene, valencene, nerolidol, guaiol, caryophyllene oxide, cedrol, α-bisabolol, and phytol.

Microbial Screening

During the cultivation process bacteria, mold, and other microbial contaminants may be introduced to the flower and other materials. Inhalation or ingestion of these contaminants and metabolites they generate may cause adverse health effects for consumers.Depending on the type of product, this panel will cover total aerobic bacteria, total yeast and mold, total coliforms, Shiga-Toxin producing E. Coli. (STEC), salmonella, 4 species of mycotoxin-producing aspergillus (niger, flavus, fumigatus, terreus), and listeria monocytogenes. Sriven Labs utilizes a combination of TEMPO, qPCR, and plating to accurately identify and quantify any microbial containments.

Mycotoxin Analysis

Mycotoxins are highly toxic compounds generated by species of fungus and bacteria (notably several species of Aspergillus). Even in small quantities these metabolites have been linked to harmful health side effects for consumers. Sriven Labs utilizes liquid chromatography with a triple quad mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) to identify and quantify 4 of the most toxic aflatoxins (G1, G2, B1, B2) as well as ochratoxin A down to the parts per million level.

Pesticide Analysis

Pesticides including arachnids, herbicides, and insecticides are used in commercially to protect various crops from predation. Consumption of these in high concentrations or over prolong periods of time can result in harmful side effects. Sriven Labs utilizes liquid chromatography with a triple quad mass spectrometer we can identify and quantify regulated pesticides down to a parts per million level.

Heavy Metals Analysis

Heavy Metals are typically introduced through soil, water, or low-grade fertilizers. When cultivating cannabis, everything in the environment can affects the plant and flower produced. Sriven Labs tests for presence heavy metal which include Arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and total Chromium (Cr). Sriven Labs utilizes an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICPMS) to test for four heavy metals in cannabis products. This high quality instrument allows us to accurately measure the levels of these harmful heavy metals down to parts per trillion, which is several orders of magnitude lower than current regulations.

Vitamin E Acetate Analysis

Vitamin E Acetate in vape pens has been linked to the serious condition, E-cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI). Due to vitamin E acetate’s physical similar to distillate it has been used as a cutting agent in vape pens. Sriven Labs utilizes liquid chromatography with a triple quad mass spectrometer to detect vitamin E acetate in the parts per million range.

Foreign Matter Inspection

This test is used to detect presence of any foreign matter or other contaminants that may compromise safety testing. Sriven labs conducts a thorough visual inspection for dirt, glass, mammal hair, insect matter and mold to identify foreign material to ensure all samples are clean and free of contaminants.

Standard & Potency Testing

Potency testing is used to find out the strength of a base product such as trim, flower, concentrates, or extracts. Knowing the potency of a product is necessary for proper package labeling. Consumers also use potency for indication on what type of effect that they will experience when they consume the product. The potency of Cannabis is based on two major chemical profiles, THCs and CBDs. SV Labs quantifies potency content for all the essential cannabinoids using High Performance Liquid Chromatography with UV detectors. Our Potency test provides results for THCA, D9THC, D8THC, THCV, CBD, CBDA, CBN, CBG, and CBC in mg/g, as well as percentages for each product’s cannabinoid content.

SV Labs uses Gas Chromatography to test for the most commonly found terpenes in cannabis, which include: Alpha Pinene, Camphene, Carene, (+) -4- carene, D-Limonene, p-Cymene, Ocimene-2, Eucalyptol, gamma Terpinene,Ocimene 1, beta Myrcene, beta Pinene, 3-Terpinolene, Linalool, Isopulegol, Geraniol, Caryphyllene, Caryophyllene Oxide, Humulene, Nerolidol, Guaiol, and alpha Bisabolol.

Residual Solvents Screening

Various chemical solvents are used in several types of extractions to produce cannabis-derived products, and many of the solvents are hazardous when inhaled or ingested. When processed incorrectly or incompletely, residual amounts of chemical solvents used during the extraction process can remain in the final product and can cause a slew of health concerns when ingested, especially after being combusted and inhaled. Residual Solvent Testing will indicate if further processing is needed prior to consumption or sale.

SV Laboratories uses Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry with HeadSpace sampling (GC-MS) to test cannabis products for 20 commonly found Residual Solvents including benzene, n-Butane, chloroform, ether, and ethyl acetate. We also use GC-MS to assess whether the product meets or fails to comply with current regulations and to ensure all products fall under the "Tolerable Daily Intake” limits.

Mycotoxin Detection

Mycotoxins are produced by certain types of mold. Exposure can result in serious health concerns, particularly when that consumption is chronic. These toxins are a prevalent concern for patients with weakened or compromised immune systems. SV Labs tests for five mycotoxins using Electro Spray Ionization LC-MS/MS: Ochratoxin A, Aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2.

Pesticide Analysis

Using the Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) & the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS/MS), we can identify and quantify what pesticides are present. Using both techniques we are able to protect our clients more by significantly reducing the risk of a false positive. We identify over 60 different pesticides that could be potentially hazardous to consumers.

Microbial Screening

During the cultivation process bacteria, mold, and other microbial contaminants may be introduced to the flower and other materials. These contaminants are harmful to consumers and need to be detected before any product enters the market. Depending on the type of product, this panel will cover Total Yeast/Mold Count, Salmonella, Shiga-Toxin producing E.coli, Candida Albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aerobic Bacteria, Bile Tolerant Gram-Negative Bacteria, and/or Aspergillus Flavus, Fumigatus, Terreus, and Niger. SV Labs utilizes RT-PCR & Plating techniques for this test. Our lab uses biomerieux platform.
